Clothing a Star Wars Obsession: Moulin Rouge: Hindi Wedding: The Dress
When we went fabric shopping for our Moulin Rouge projects, we lucked upon a creamy white material with a hint of shine and a nice drape at Wal-Mart on the $1/yard table. And of course promptly bought all fourteen yards. Roughly half of it went to my dress; the other half went to clothe our two Hindi slave girls. The initial trim is a cream & gold jaquard 5/8" ribbon by Europa Imports Inc.

Since I made this costume overnight in almost every sense of the word, there was no time to make a corset to go underneath to help give the proper shape, or even time to worry about making a near 100% accurate reproduction. My starting point was the View B bodice piece from New Look 6860, which I've had in my pattern stash since the beginning, but never used before. Obviously, I did not use the spaghetti straps. I also changed the zipper location from the center back to under my right arm.

The skirt, I draped on the dress form once I had my lined bodice section together. Three layers total. One acted as a skirt lining. The middle layer became the trained layer of the gown (although I didn't cut the train to be as long or as wide as on the original). The third, and topmost layer, the shorter layer that comes to a point on one side. When I created the layers, I fit the bottom-most layer to the dress form and then used that as a pattern to cut out the other two layers with a little bit of extra room on each one so they'd flow some. They all got sew up the left side and attached at to the bodice. After inserting my invisible zipper, I sewed up the remaining side seam on each layer. It wasn't until after all of that that I cut the point into the top layer. Being very careful, of course, to not cut too much material away as I did not have the time or extra fabric to redo that layer.

I didn't have the time that night to apply the ribbon to the bodice and skirt, or even to hem the darn thing, because I had to get Brian's Sitar Player jacket cut out. Thank heavens for Stich Witchery. A few minutes with the iron so graciously provided by the hotel, and voila! Bands of ribbon around the top and bottom of the bodice band. Not exactly accurate, but for an overnight sewing job, not bad at all.

I will be finishing this dress up sometime in the near future. Plenty more ribbon for trimming the bodice and skirt, and a few ideas on how to apply the design in between. I may or may not go back and add the chiffon layer I omitted for time's sake.
