When it came to adding the lace around the leg holes and turning back a hem, I found it was easier to sew on the lace, turn back the fabric, sew over the lace again, and then trim the fabric back, rather than trim and fold back ¼" of fabric before sewing it down. I probably left more of a seam allowance than the designer desired, but it worked for me.
