Clothing a Star Wars Obsession: Hermione's Muggle Street Clothes: Wand
Rather than spend up to $100 on a Japanese replica from eBay (or waste money buying a Rubies product), I decided to make my own wand for Halloween. Wandmaking for the Crafty shows how to make SS/CoS-style wand handles with Sculpey, and I adapted the idea for this wand. Much easier than trying to carve out the shapes, and faster, too.

For support along the narrow part of the wand, I wrapped Sculpey around a plain chopstick. To make it longer (my finished product is almost 14" long), I just added on fat bits of Scupley until I was satisfied with the length. The vines were make with the classic clay technique of rolling out tiny little "snakes." I just randomly applied them as I rolled them out until I got a design I liked and there were few bare-looking spots on the handle. The leaves were just little balls of clay smushed and flattened and pinched until they looked like generic leaves. After the center vein was etched in, I applied them here and there along the vines to fill in blank areas, trying to make sure that there were leaves on all sides. Word of advice, don't use a metal baking sheet when baking your Sculpey; use something glass as recommended. The side touching the baking sheet started to scorch a little, but a little paint and voila! You don't notice it.

To color the wand, I used one thick coat of Anita's All Purpose Acrylic Craft Paint in "Coffee," then wiped/rinsed most of it off, leaving traces of it around the vines and leaves. Then I repainted it with a light wash of watered-down paint, letting spots get more layers than others to give it a natural, stained wood-like finish. Overall, I'm really happy with the way it turned out.
