Although I toyed with the idea of making it out of sculpey, like Jennifer did on the headpiece she made to go with the gown, I opted for sintra because it would be easier & faster to shape. Just cut out, boil, and shape. The nice thing about it is that I was able to mold it to my own head. It just slides on much like a headband does. To color it, I applied the miracle that is silver Rub-N-Buff. It gives it a nice metallic sheen to it without screaming "silver" or some other color.
The design I freehanded after house of staring at screencaps of the top of Padme's headpiece. (Very nice shots available while she's in her room packing.) It turns out that on my headpiece the design is a bit lopsided, because I only sketched one half and not very symmetrically, but it's one of those things most people (aka "the general public") won't notice.
I used a smooth-edge tracing wheel to transfer the patter onto the sintra, then outlined it with 3D paint. (I used Scribbles 3-Dimensional paint in iridscent silver.) My technique needs some work—there are a few spots where the paint's a bit gloppy—but overall it was a fairly simple process. The paint tube has a fine tip, which helped a lot.
When I first made the headpiece, I tried hot glueing hair combs to the underside to help keep it in place, but they were too thick to make the headpiece fit properly. However, the rough side of velcro works wonders. Now it doesn't try sliding off the back of my head when I move, although my way of doing the hairstyle does keep it from sliding completely off.
